ASOBEXS UK, an alumni association born from the camaraderie of the 1994 graduating class of a distinguished educational institution, stands as a testament to the enduring power of connection and shared purpose. What began as a nostalgic gathering of old classmates in Lewisham, London, in November 2008 has since blossomed into a thriving network of alumni, committed to fostering community and giving back.
The Birth of a Vision: Early Foundations
In 2008, members of the class of '94 reconnected for the first time since graduation. This meaningful reunion sowed the seeds for something greater—a vision to create a structured network for UK-based alumni. By the summer of 2009, the group convened once again, this time with a mission to formalize their association by drafting a constitution.
The foundation laid during this period established a tradition of quarterly meetings hosted in cities across the UK, including London, Southampton, Northampton, Luton, and Coventry. Between 2009 and 2011, these gatherings became a platform for strengthening bonds, discussing shared goals, and building a sense of belonging.
Opening Doors: The Evolution into ASOBEXS UK
In 2011, a pivotal decision was made to extend membership beyond the class of '94, transforming the group into ASOBEXS UK. This milestone was marked by the election of Esseme Henry as the association’s first president. Under his leadership, the group saw remarkable growth, both in membership and in purpose.
Subsequent presidents—Clifford Nkwenteyim (elected in 2013) and Teddy Effesoa (elected in 2014)—ushered in new eras of growth and financial stability. Effesoa’s tenure also brought an updated constitution and a more robust executive team, reflecting the evolving needs of the association.
Impact Beyond Members: Charity and Networking
In 2015, ASOBEXS UK hosted its first charity event in Leicester, marking a significant shift toward community impact. This event was a resounding success, demonstrating the group’s commitment to giving back. With continued membership growth, the association began networking with other organizations, solidifying its place as a leading alumni body within the Cameroonian diaspora in the UK.
The momentum continued into 2016 and beyond, with additional charity events and strengthened ties among members. Under the presidency of Julius Fomenky, elected in 2017, ASOBEXS UK continued to flourish, hosting more events and furthering its charitable initiatives in 2018 and 2019.
Resilience in Adversity: Navigating the Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic brought unforeseen challenges in 2020, but ASOBEXS UK adapted seamlessly. Virtual meetings kept the community connected, and the executive committee worked tirelessly to maintain engagement and morale during these difficult times.
A New Era: Growth and Rebranding
In 2022, Jules Fonane K. took the helm as president, ushering in a period of unprecedented growth. The association reached its highest membership numbers to date and successfully hosted a 2023 charity ball to support their alma mater. This event highlighted ASOBEXS UK’s enduring vibrancy and commitment to its mission.
Looking ahead, the association has ambitious plans under Fonane K.’s leadership. These include hosting the first ASOBEXS convention in the summer of 2025 and expanding membership to alumni across Europe. This strategic vision will culminate in the rebranding of ASOBEXS UK into ASOBEXS Europe by 2025.
A Bright Future: Continuing the Legacy
The journey of ASOBEXS UK is one of resilience, growth, and shared purpose. Its members remain steadfast in their dedication to fostering community, supporting one another, and making a meaningful impact beyond their ranks. As the association prepares for its next chapter, its legacy as a beacon of connection and philanthropy continues to shine brightly.
Together, ASOBEXS UK is not just an alumni association; it is a testament to the power of unity and the enduring bonds of friendship.
